I have been in this class almost the whole school year. This project/ Work is about aquaponics that is a sustainable food production system that combines a traditional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. This project show us how we can grow fish at the same time grow our vegetables and help at the same time the agriculture industries. Also work as a team and be able to communicate between each other.
We haven't completed this work; it’s a project that requires time, and a lot. The reason why is because we are growing lettuce, okra, poppy, cilantro, spinach, oregano, parsley and tilapia, it takes time to feed them. As they grow we are taking pictures and testing our tilapia water; ph, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, water temperature, also for the soil. Time is one thing we as a group manage to have and to support each others theory about the cause of the fishes and vegetables growth. Another surprising detail was how Kearny students were disturbed by the fishes in the toilets, I mean fishes need to died, it natural. At the same time my group needs to be organized with the data and be able to blog our information and the photos we take each day for GREEN MACHINE BLOGSITE. Knowledge that i gain was organication and time manangement, also communication skills.
Something that i would change by doing this project is time, if we would of started this project seens tha begining of second quater of first sememster we would have tilapia for dinner by now. Another thing would be a bigger room for our tanks, also to have airconditioner because everyt hing i go there it has bad odor. this experiment is one of my best work because i kind of knew what to do, but as time passed i learned from the UC students and Ivan and Robert. and go better on what to do with my project. It was a group project that included; Marissa M., Elizabeth J., Kezia M., Sonija B., and Paulina R.
